. inside a two-story townhouse in the 3,000 bridgeport court, a couple and their 4-year-old granddaughter were trapped on the upper floor. firefighters arrived in minutes. the entire building was engulfed in flames. san jose police officer tried to help the family but it was too late. >> somehow, got a big head start on us. burned hot, fast, consumed most of the apartment even within a 3-minute response time for us. >> reporter: neighbors say the couple had lived in the complex for about 20 years. the family member, who was staying in a nearby apartment grabbed a nearly empty fire extinguisher but it it was useless against the flames. three people including a police officer was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. >>> a developing story tonight regarding secretary of state hilary rodham clinton, she has been hospitalized with a blood clot. clinton has been recovering from the flu and a concussion. she had been planning return to work this week but the former first lady will be monitored at a new york hospital for the next 48 hours. >>> tonight is looking bleak, despite looking thr
grandparents everyone the fire broke out late knight in a second floor apartment on bridgeport court in west san jose. the 5-year-old man, his wife -- the 56-year-old man, his wife and daughter died in the fire. the fire damaged several other units. the fire displaced dozens of residents who are now receiving assistance from the red cross. >>> a natural gas line burst outside a home thats with on fire. the gas leak sent flames shooting into the air on athens street around 1:00 this morning. ktvu's alex savidge reports on why this was such a difficult fire to knock down. >> reporter: a dangerous situation for san francisco firefighters trying to control an early-morning house fire in the excelsior district. flames began shooting from a natural gas line in front of the place. a deputy chief told me the fire was essentially gas-fed at one point and crews couldn't reach the shutoff valve because it was engulled in flames. >> they had to have that free burning for a long time until pg&e could put a hole in the street and shut it off from there. we couldn't get to the shutoff area because the fire

. investigators are searching for the cause. sue thompson is live at the scene on bridgeport court. >> reporter: good morning. investigators will be back out here later today to try and determine or at least work towards what caused this fatal fire over the weekend. some residents tell abc7 news that the fire alarm never went off. that fatal fire tore through an upper apartment at 3700 bridgeport court saturday night. many say they had to run for their lives to escape the fast flames and intense smoke. sadly, 4-year-old and her grandparents died when they were trapped in a back bedroom because of the flames. her mom said she barely made it out alive and she woke to flames in a bedroom and the fire alarm never went off. some 52 people have been displaced because of this fire. they will not be able to come back home until power is restored to the building. red cross has stepped in to try and provide shelter. the grandparents that perished in the fire we are told they lived in the apartment for more than 20 years, and their daughter said she desperately tried to save them saturday night and her li

unit on bridgeport court was fully engulfed in flames. kron 4's reggie kumar is live at the scene. reggie you've been with family members of the victims today? what a terrible tragedy for them. >> reporter: vicky. vannessa pulido, her two kids and boyfirned saved themselves by jumping out of the second floor window of the unit. she says she could hear her aunt, who died in the fire screaming for help. bulmaro and marina pulido maldonado and their four year old grand-daughter kyra chavez died in saturday night's fire. they were among eight family members who lived inside this now burned up three bedroom apartment in west san jose. vanessa pulido her two kids and boyfriend also lived there. she says they barley escaped the intense flames. pulido says she will never forget hearing her aunt screaming for help. she says her boyfriend quickly jumped into action and saved their lives. >>> when i opened the room door, we saw a whole bunch of black smoke and fire when i opened my door i heard my aunt scream, i heard her say something, but everything happened so quick i couldn't see her. sl
